Social Media Suggestions

Social media is a free or low-cost way to reach lots of people.  One of the best parts of social media is that you can reach a specific target audience as well.  Below are a few tips on getting started using social media.  Be careful though, because many social media sites have age restrictions, so be sure your parents and other business partners know which sites you’re exploring using.

Facebook

Facebook is one of the best known social media sites.  Here are detailed instructions on how to set up a Facebook page for your business.

You have the option to pay for advertising through Facebook to promote your business.  However, before you start paying for anything, send out the link to your page to your friends, family, and customers through an email.  You will be able to start building your base for free, and then once people are following your page, they’ll learn more about your business with each new post.

Twitter

Twitter is a great way to share little snippets of information with lots of people.  You can also send people to find out more information through links.  To get started on Twitter, use these basic instructions.   There are lots of tools out there to monitor post in both Facebook and Twitter.  That way you don’t have to worry about posting things exactly when you want them to go out, nor do you need to worry about email alerts every time someone mentions you in a post.    Try using Hootsuite or TweetDeck to get started.

Pinterest

If you have a product with lots of different versions, many different ways to be used, or just looks great in photos, Pinterest could be a great social media tool for you.  Users select images they like, can make comments, and then “pin” those images to descriptive boards.  Your product photos could end up as part of someone’s dream home, wedding, or craft to try.

Use these clear instructions to get started with a Pinterest account.

Instagram

Instagram is another great tool to use with a very visual product.  However, this is also something to consider if you have a service you’re offering.  Instagram allows you to share photos and short videos of your business in a variety of ways, creating artistic photos and accessing trending topics through hashtags (like in Twitter and Facebook).  You can also connect your Instagram account to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, which lets your followers of all see all your posts.

To get started, you’ll need to download the Instagram app on your phone (Apple or Android) and create an account using your email address and a password.  From there, the app will walk you through editing your profile and will find suggestions for friends and groups to follow.

YouTube

YouTube is the best place to show off how-to videos for your product or service or share interviews of you or your business partners.  Videos can be very short, or many minutes long, however, most people prefer to watch videos that are about two minutes or less.  Once you’ve captured your video (on  your phone, GoPro, or other camera), follow these instructions for uploading your video.  Make sure that you’re adding in tags, or words that relate to your video.  That’s how people find your video when they are searching.

Others

There are lots of other social media options, including blogging, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and more.  Be sure to tell us which social media options you’d like us to discuss more, by submitting a comment here.
